I’m just like you, but I got lucky and stumbled into the amazing world of digital marketing! Here is my story...
As a kid...
Growing up, I was the quintessential curious kid. My parents often found me bargaining with pay to see how much money I could make. For example, picking up pinecones from the front yard. I started at a penny a pine cone when the yard was full but when there were scarcely any pinecones, I would raise my pay to a dime. My childhood was filled with dreams of inventing and selling something that would change the world. I always sought out activities that stimulated my creativity and critical thinking. My room was a testament to my curiosity, filled with my art projects, art supplies, and wide array of pretty pictures. This insatiable curiosity laid the foundation for my future entrepreneurial spirit.
Then the entrepreneurship bug bit me...
In high school, my interest shifted from sports to making money. I found myself working in the restaurant business all the time understanding the more cash I made, the more vacations I could take but the "grind" couldn't last forever. I knew I wasn't finished learning so off to college I went. It was there where I started small side hustles selling homemade jewelry and cutting hair. The thrill of making a sale and seeing my creations bring joy to others was addictive. It was then that I knew entrepreneurship was my calling. The more I learned about entrepreneurship, the more I realized it was a way to combine my creativity with a purpose. I began reading biographies of successful entrepreneurs, absorbing their stories and strategies. This passion for entrepreneurship continued to grow through out college, where I majored in Communication Arts with an emphasis in PR taking every opportunity to learn about speaking, coaching and running a business.
Then I tried all the things that, well, didn't work...
Like many aspiring entrepreneurs, I faced my fair share of failures. I was selling everything from Taste of Home
Entertaining, The Pampered Chef to Southern Living at Home which we know where those businesses are today. I then launched a Home Decorator's Magazine which I hustled selling pages which featured local businesses. Many hats were worn being a saleswoman, photographer, writer, publisher and distributor all over the city, all at once. Since this was a monthly publication there were very long days and nights filled with deadlines then I would start all over again for the next month. I struggled for time raising my daughter and being a family. I tried to incorporate an online presence which was minimal then the 2008 building crisis came, and I closed the pages, so to speak. These setbacks were disheartening, but they taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability.
I realized the importance of understanding my audience and the value of effective marketing. Each failure, though painful, was a stepping stone that provided me with critical insights and skills.
Finally, I cracked the code!
My turning point came when I stumbled upon digital marketing. It started with a free webinar on social media marketing that piqued my interest. I decided to dive deeper and invested in comprehensive courses covering SEO, social media marketing, email campaigns, and pay-per-click advertising. I immersed myself in learning everything I could about these strategies. I applied these newfound skills to a new venture—an online product and coaching business. I used social media to create engaging content, optimized my website for search engines, and built an email list to nurture leads. The results were astounding. My client base grew rapidly, and my revenue soared. I realized the power of digital marketing to reach a vast audience and convert interest into sales. This success story was not just a fluke; it was the result of strategic planning, consistent effort, leveraging the right tools, and most of all....never-ever-ever give up !!!
